The southern Serengeti and Ndutu region become the stage of the Great Migration calving season, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest gather on the short-grass plains to give birth. This extraordinary concentration of prey attracts lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other predators, creating some of the most dynamic wildlife photography opportunities in Africa.

This 9-day photographer-led safari combines four of Northern Tanzania's most iconic wildlife destinations. We begin among the giant baobabs and elephant herds of Tarangire National Park, continue through the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, spend three full days in the heart of the calving season around Ndutu, and finish in the legendary Serengeti.

A key feature of this safari is the use of a specially designed photographic safari vehicle in Tarangire and Ndutu. Unlike standard safari vehicles, this extended Land Cruiser has been modified specifically for photographers, with large sliding side windows, unobstructed shooting positions and ample space for long telephoto lenses. With a maximum of four photographers onboard, every participant enjoys a dedicated window seat and exceptional photographic flexibility in the field.

The safari is personally accompanied by wildlife photographer Gabriel Haering and includes photography coaching, image reviews and practical field guidance throughout the journey.

Dedicated Vehicle in Tarangire

For this safari, we use a specially designed open safari vehicle with seven seats, intentionally limited to four photographers in the rear passenger area, plus the tour leader and professional driver-guide in the front.

The absence of side windows provides unobstructed 360° visibility, allowing photographers to react quickly to wildlife sightings and capture images without reflections, window frames or shooting restrictions. With only four participants sharing the vehicle, each photographer benefits from generous personal space, easy lens handling, and excellent shooting angles on both sides of the vehicle.

This configuration is particularly well suited for wildlife photography, offering a more immersive safari experience and maximizing photographic opportunities throughout the journey.

Key advantages for photographers

  • Only 4 photographers per vehicle
  • No side windows or window frames
  • Unrestricted 360° visibility
  • Easier use of large telephoto lenses
  • Faster reaction to wildlife sightings
  • More comfortable shooting positions
  • More immersive connection with the surrounding environment

Dedicated Extended Landcruiser in Ngorongo Crater

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) only allows standard safari vehicles such as Toyota Land Cruisers and similar enclosed safari vehicles inside the crater.

The fully open photographic vehicle we have used in Tarangire or will use in Ndutu  are not permitted for game drives inside the Ngorongoro Crater.

With just four participants in the rear section, photographers enjoy generous personal space, easy access to both sides of the vehicle, and comfortable handling of larger telephoto lenses. Large sliding windows and the pop-up roof provide excellent photographic opportunities, while the reduced number of guests ensures greater flexibility when positioning for wildlife sightings and photography. The result is a more comfortable and productive photographic experience than a standard safari vehicle operating at full occupancy.

In summary:
  • Configured for only 4 photographers instead of full passenger capacity
  • Generous personal space for camera gear and telephoto lenses
  • Easy access to both sides of the vehicle for changing shooting angles
  • Large sliding windows for unobstructed photography
  • Pop-up roof providing elevated viewing and shooting opportunities
  • Greater flexibility during wildlife sightings and photographic stops
  • More comfortable photography experience during full-day game drives
  • Ideal balance between safety, comfort and photographic performance

Dedicated Photographic Safari Vehicle in Ndutu

For most of the safari, participants travel in a specially modified photographic Land Cruiser designed specifically for wildlife photography.

Features include:
✓ Maximum 4 photographers
✓ Guaranteed individual window seat
✓ Large sliding side windows for eye-level photography
✓ Ideal support for lenses from 100 mm to 600 mm and beyond
✓ Unobstructed shooting angles on both sides of the vehicle
✓ Excellent visibility for low-angle wildlife photography
✓ Flexible positioning for changing wildlife situations
✓ More comfortable image-making experience than standard safari vehicles

This vehicle is one of the reasons why photographic safaris differ substantially from conventional wildlife safaris and allows photographers to fully concentrate on composition, behaviour and light rather than competing for space.

Who is this safari for?

This photographic safari is designed for wildlife photographers and nature enthusiasts who would like to experience one of the most dynamic periods of the African wildlife calendar: the Great Migration calving season.

It is particularly well suited to photographers who enjoy observing and photographing animal behaviour rather than simply collecting species sightings. The result is an exceptional combination of newborn wildlife, predator activity and constantly changing photographic opportunities.

The itinerary combines the elephant-rich landscapes of Tarangire National Park, the spectacular scenery of the Ngorongoro Crater, the calving grounds of Ndutu and the vast plains of the Serengeti. Together, these areas offer a remarkable variety of subjects, from intimate wildlife portraits and bird photography to dramatic predator-prey interactions and expansive landscape compositions.

This safari may be particularly appealing if you:
✓ Enjoy wildlife photography and would like to improve your photographic skills in the field

✓ Would like opportunities to photograph lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas in their natural environment
✓ Prefer travelling in a small group with a maximum of four participants per vehicle

Why January Is The Best Time To Visit Ndutu

January is one of the most rewarding months to visit the Ndutu region of northern Tanzania. Located between the southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Ndutu becomes the centre of the Great Migration calving season, attracting vast numbers of wildebeest, zebras and predators. For wildlife photographers, it offers a unique combination of dramatic wildlife behaviour, beautiful landscapes and exceptional photographic opportunities.

Peak Wildebeest Calving Season

Between January and February, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest gather on the short-grass plains of Ndutu to give birth. Thousands of calves can be born every day, creating one of the most remarkable wildlife spectacles in Africa.

Highest Predator Concentration

Where there are large numbers of newborn animals, predators are never far away. Lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas and jackals are particularly active during this period, offering excellent opportunities to observe and photograph natural predator-prey interactions.

Abundance of Young Animals

The presence of countless young wildebeest, zebras and gazelles creates unique photographic subjects. Moments of curiosity, playfulness and the first days of life often result in memorable and emotional wildlife images.

Green Landscapes and Dramatic Skies

Unlike the dry season, January transforms the plains into a vibrant green landscape. Fresh vegetation, seasonal wildflowers and dramatic cloud formations provide beautiful backgrounds for wildlife photography and add colour and atmosphere to every image.

Exceptional Wildlife Behaviour

The combination of migration, calving and predator activity creates a constantly changing environment. Every game drive offers the possibility of witnessing unique wildlife behaviour, from protective mothers and playful calves to hunting predators and territorial interactions.

Excellent Photographic Light

January typically brings clear mornings, soft golden light at sunrise and warm evening colours before sunset. Combined with the green surroundings and abundant wildlife, these conditions create outstanding opportunities for both wildlife and landscape photography.

A Photographer's Dream Safari

For photographers, January offers an exceptional combination of migration, predator action, newborn wildlife, beautiful scenery and favourable light. Few destinations in Africa provide such a rich variety of photographic opportunities within a relatively compact area, making Ndutu one of the best places to experience the Great Migration during the calving season.

In short: if your goal is to photograph the Great Migration, newborn wildlife, big cats and the dramatic cycle of life on the African plains, January in Ndutu is one of the finest wildlife photography experiences Tanzania has to offer.

January Photographic Safari

Great Migration Calving Season Safari: Park Comparison

This comparison focuses on the four key areas of the January photographic safari: Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, Ndutu and Central Serengeti. The scores are practical indicators from a photographer’s perspective, considering wildlife, big cats, landscape, crowds, weather and bird photography.

How to Read the Scores

Score interpretation: 9–10 = exceptional photographic value, 8 = strong positive factor, 5–7 = good or context-dependent factor, 1–4 = limiting factor.

Crowd score: a high score means lower crowds and a better photographic experience. A low score means higher visitor pressure.

Dark green = 9–10 Light green = 8 Light yellow = 5–7 Light red = 1–4 Blue border = safari highlights

Photographer Value by Month – Northern Tanzania Safari Seasons

This table gives a simplified month-by-month photographer value score for Northern Tanzania, including the calving season, Mara River crossing period, dry season and long rainy season.

Month Main Photographic Situation Crowd Rating Photographer Value
January Calving season begins, green landscapes, predators active 6.5 9.6
February Peak calving season, newborn wildebeest, intense predator activity 6.0 10.0
March Late calving season, dramatic skies, green backgrounds 8.0 9.2
April Long rainy season, lush but less predictable, difficult logistics 9.5 6.0
May End of long rains, low crowds, very green scenery, variable access 9.0 7.0
June Transition to dry season, improving visibility, pleasant conditions 7.0 8.0
July Dry season, strong wildlife viewing, migration moving north, high visitor density 4.0 8.4
August Mara River crossing period, dramatic action, very high visitor density 3.0 9.0
September Mara River crossings continue, excellent action, dry landscapes, high crowds 3.5 9.2
October Late dry season, wildlife concentration, harsher light, dry backgrounds 5.0 8.2
November Short rains, greener landscapes, birds, lower crowds, variable weather 8.5 8.1
December Green season builds, migration returns south, good bird photography 6.5 8.6

Crowd Rating: a higher score means fewer vehicles and a more exclusive photographic experience. A lower score indicates higher visitor density.

July to October is the traditional high season in Northern Tanzania. Wildlife viewing is excellent, but visitor density is usually highest in the Serengeti and especially in the Ngorongoro Crater. Photographers may encounter many vehicles at popular sightings, particularly around big cats, river crossings and iconic viewpoints.

August and September coincide with the famous Mara River crossing period. River crossings can produce spectacular action photography, but they are unpredictable and often attract large numbers of vehicles. Around active crossing points, the northern Serengeti can become particularly crowded.

January and February offer one of the best overall balances for wildlife photographers: Great Migration herds, newborn wildebeest, predator activity, green landscapes, dramatic skies, excellent bird photography and lower visitor pressure than the traditional summer high season.
